Book Cover Project
I was asked to come up with visually dynamic book cover designs for a book. I needed to provide a dynamic center-line layout and an asymmetrical layout. This project shows my competence in creating hierarchy, movement, and balance as well as color, contrast, and dynamically using basic typography.
![]() Symmetrical Book Cover | ![]() Asymmetrical Book Cover |
|---|
Hierarchy:
The hierarchy is established through a strong top-to-bottom vertical progression. The primary focal point is the title, "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes," which draws immediate attention due to its massive scale and bright gold color used. The secondary focal point is the large, detailed bird in the center, which acts as the visual weight that anchors the composition. The tertiary focal points are the author’s name and the black snakes, which frame the layout and provide secondary details.
Movement:
This design utilizes rhythmic vertical movement to activate the central axis. Rather than being static and flat, the eye is pulled from the top of the page with the title down through the middle of the bird and the branch, eventually landing on the author’s name at the bottom. The four snakes in the corners act as brackets, pushing the viewer's eyes back toward the center line and forcing the viewer's eyes to look downward.
Balance:
The composition shows symmetrical balance. By mirroring the snakes in the corners and centering both the typography and the bird, I have created a sense of stability and authority. This balance is active rather than boring because the bird’s posture is slightly organic and off-center, and the snakes overlap the text providing just enough visual tension to keep the perfectly centered layout from feeling flat or too formal.
Visually Compelling/Repetition:
This design is visually compelling because of its rich color palette and high-contrast imagery. The deep, mossy/velvet green background suggests a dark, natural mystery, providing a perfect contrast for the gold and black objects. The use of texture, combined with the sharp, clean knockouts of the bird and snakes, gives the cover a premium look and quality that feels like it is formal. I utilized repetition by placing the black snakes in all four corners. This repetition reinforces the snakes theme of the book and creates a visual frame that traps the viewer's eye within the central composition.

Hierarchy:
I utilized typographic hierarchy to prioritize the keywords of the title. I punched the words "Songbirds" and "Snakes" by increasing their scale and changing their value to a reflective gold while also dodging "The Ballad of" and "and" with a smaller size.
Created a clear focal order: primary title, followed by secondary focal point of the golden snake.
Movement:
To make my design asymmetrical I created an intentional circular eye path counter-clockwise. The main title pulls the eye down to the heavy Golden Snake in the bottom-right. The texture and letters then guides the viewer over to the tertiary roses on the left, which ultimately direct the eye back to the author’s name and the NYT bestseller text, completing the visual circular motion.
Balance:
This composition utilizes asymmetrical balance by offsetting the significant visual weight of the Golden Snake in the bottom-right corner with the complex layout of the roses and leaves in the center-left. This creates a balanced distribution of interest without relying on symmetry.
Visually Compelling:
This design is visually compelling because it creates extreme value contrast. The deep, shadowed reds of the textured background act as a stage, allowing the gold typography and metallic snake to "pop" with a cinematic capitol-rich feel. The compisition feels intentional and controls the viewers eye motion. The snake adds visually weight by being anchored and popping out of the page. The overlap of the roses creates spatial depth. The design looks professional and unified through the use of three colors that have good contrast.
